Fred R. Amsler, Jr., 90, of Northumberland, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 5, 2024.Born August 7, 1933, in Oil City, PA, he was a son of the late Fred Ritts Amsler Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Stahl) Amsler.Fred grew up in Titusville, PA, and as a teenager he lived in Millcreek Township, near Erie. He graduated from the Millcreek High School (now known as McDowell High School) in 1951. Fred studied engineering at Carnegie Mellon University for one year, before transferring to Bucknell to complete his pre-med education. He graduated from Bucknell in 1955, and went on to Temple University Medical School, where he earned his MD in 1959. Fred Served a one year internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, and, in 1960, began his resident training in Orthopedic Surgery at Hamot Hospital, Erie. After completing the first year of surgery residency, Fred entered the US Navy Medical Corps to serve his military obligations. (The federally mandated "Doctor Draft" was in effect at that time.)In 1961, during his first year of service in the Navy, Fred served as the Assistant Medical Officer aboard the USS Boxer, LPH-4, a helicopter aircraft carrier, which was operating in the Caribbean at that time. In September 1962, just before the "Bay of Pigs" operation in Cuba occurred, Fred was transferred to the US Naval Hospital in Philadelphia to complete residence training in Orthopedic Surgery. After completing the Orthopedic Surgery residency in 1965, he was assigned to serve on the staff of the US Naval Hospital in Camp Lejeune, NC. Less than a year later, at the height of the Vietnam War, he received "dispatch orders" to go to Vietnam to serve with a surgical team assigned to the Amphibious Force Alpha. The surgical team spent six months operating the hospital facilities on the USS Okinawa LPH-3 and another six months on the USS Iwo Jima, LHP-2. These medical facilities supported the marines that operated in the I-Corps sector if Vietnam next to the DMZ. 1967-1968 was a very busy year for the Navy and Marines in Vietnam, and sadly there were many casualties. Owen T. Anderson, 92, of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania died peacefully on Thursday, August 5, 2023 in Pittsburgh. He was born May 11, 1931 at home in Adams, Minnesota to (Alice) Helen (Bohn) and Oscar (O. T.) Anderson.Owen was a parent, husband, educator, and friend, leaving a legacy of curiosity and persistence for those who knew him. He was a gentle man of few words with a thoughtful demeanor. He was the beloved husband of the late Judith Yehle Anderson with whom he raised five children, supported their community and traveled extensively.Born and raised in Adams Minnesota, Owen spent much of his time when not in school working at Anderson Hardware, co-owned by his father and uncle who often sent him to deliver and install the latest plumbing and electrical fixtures of the day. He studied physics and earned his bachelor's degree from St. Olaf College in 1953 and later obtained his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison conducting experimental research in low temperature physics. In Madison he met Judith Yehle, who was pursuing her undergraduate degree, courted her, married her and started their young family while completing their degrees and beginning their careers. He worked at IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York, before accepting a position as a Professor of Physics in 1961 at Bucknell University where he worked for thirty-two years inspiring countless students and colleagues (and attended countless sporting events). In 1966 he and Judy bought a run down old farmstead on Beaver Run Road west of Lewisburg where they lovingly and intentionally cultivated a home for their family. After more than fifty years, the Tree Farm remains a gift of nature and open spaces for many and a continuing legacy of his vision and stewardship for the community. Owen and Judy joined other families to found and sustain the Joseph Priestley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, keeping curiosity and wonderment alive for generations of children and adults.Outside of his academic pursuits and the Anderson farm, Owen had many pastimes that reflected his diverse interests and love for intricacies. He loved clocks, optical illusions, atmospheric phenomena, photography, and solving brain teaser puzzles. His Norwegian heritage and genealogy occupied a special place in his heart. In his retirement he devoted his time to his work with the Linn Conservancy Buffalo Creek Watershed Alliance, volunteered with the League of Women Voters, the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum and the Union County Library and always made time to travel all over the world with his beloved Judy.Owen is survived by his children: Owen (Ted) and Andrea Anderson, Margaret (Peggy) and Doug Temple, Douglas and Marla Anderson, Ellen Anderson and Edwin Andrews, and Steven and Laura Anderson; and his grandchildren: Julee Wheeler, Jeff Giacomini, Christina Temple, Dan Temple, Noah Anderson, Alison Anderson, Adele Andrews, Audrey Anderson, and Edward Anderson as well as many nieces and nephews. (Kohl) Auman. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gloria Auman, Bettina Tucker and Joanne Hendricks. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Doris (Kline) Auman, of Middleburg; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Erin Auman, of New Berlin; and his grandchildren, whom he adored, Atlee and Oliver. Also, siblings, Dolores Shaffer, of Mount Pleasant Mills, Jim and Connie Auman, of Sunbury, Ruby and Jim Baney, of Mount Pleasant Mills, Bill and Sue Auman, of Shamokin; as well as his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Terry and Debra Reidinger, of McClure, and many nieces and nephews.Donald graduated from Northumberland High School in 1956. He worked several jobs before choosing his career. He worked part time at The Custard Cup in Shamokin Dam, Furman's Cannery in Northumberland and started work at Chef Boyardee in Milton before entering the armed services in 1959. Don proudly served his country as specialist 4th class in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. During his service he was part of the military police stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After returning home he went back to work at Chef Boyardee before applying to the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. While waiting for word from the PSP Don began work at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut, training to be a machinist. He was in Connecticut training when a letter arrived to his family's home in Pennsylvania. Enclosed was an invitation to appear at the State Police Academy in Hershey, Pa. to begin his training to become a State Police Officer. Don found himself at a cross roads. When faced with the decision to either stay in Connecticut and complete his training to become a machinist or go back to Pennsylvania and train at the police academy, Don did what anyone would do... he flipped a coin. The flip that decided his future took him down a path that would lead him to serve his community for 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police. It also pointed him toward meeting Doris and they began building a life together, when they married on Nov. 22, 1975. While with PSP he was a criminal investigator and he served as the state police fire marshal. After retiring from the state police he was invited to work security with the US Marshals Service in the Federal Court House. He worked in Harrisburg for 1 1/2 years before being transferred to Williamsport for the remainder of his second career. He worked for the federal government for 21 years before taking his final well earned retirement.Donald was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove where he was once a member of the church council and an adult Sunday school teacher. He held memberships with: Selinsgrove American Legion Post 25, 82D Airborne Division Association, Fraternal Order of Police, NRA, and the Retired State Police Association of Pennsylvania.Don loved his family, especially when it came to being Pop Pop to his grandchildren. He enjoyed family vacations in the motor home, riding motorcycle, reading and tinkering in his fix-it shop.Donald's family is grateful for the loving care provided by Station A and the physical therapy department at The Manor at Penn Village as well as Residential Home Health and personal care providers.Don never liked being the center of attention and it is at his request that there will not be any services held. His family would like to honor those wishes as he has now entered, as he called it, the "big sleep."Since there will not be any services, donations in Don's memory can be made to an organization meaningful to the family, ThinkBIG. Donations can be made online by visiting www.thinkbigpa.org or by mailing a check made payable to "ThinkBIG Pediatric Cancer Fund" to ThinkBIG, 530 Montour Blvd., Suite B, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.

Lucy Baitsell, formerly Lucy Spriggle, was 65 when she was called to enter the annals of legend and myth on April 21, 2024. She was an avid adventurer when playing games with her son, nieces and nephews in their youth. She was a storyteller, a chronicler of family legends and genealogy, the person you went to when you needed someone to help you feel grounded and understood without judgement.Lucy had a full heart, and her door was always open to her family and the chosen family her son picked up along the way. She had a love for classic movies, especially the universal monster movies and took great glee in watching it with people who'd never seen them before, talking about the lore of the actors, movies and story. Those who've known her know she was larger than life with a personality that was much bigger than her small frame. She has inspired legends in their own rights as she had a hand in the raising of so many family members and found family in the strays her son would bring home.Preceding her on the next adventure were her mother, Nancy; brother, Greg; and little brother, Cory whom she is sure to talk the ears off with everything that had been happening and sharing stories.Behind, she left her husband, Dan Baitsell; her sisters, Renee and Meghan; brother, Troy; her father, Herman Spriggle; and her son, Kyle Spriggle. She had more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends than you could shake a stick at and no doubt will miss them boundlessly.A gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, with a celebration and eulogy beginning at 3.

James A. Belfie, 84, peacefully passed on to be with his Heavenly Father, Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023. He was the beloved husband to June Belfie; dearly loved by his five children as well as their spouses, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, plus his nieces and nephews.James was born in Philadelphia to James S. and Rose Belfie, where he enjoyed a childhood surrounded by a close community of extended family. In his youth, he attended Monsignor Bonner High School in Upper Darby, and Temple University where he played football on a full scholarship and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration. James was the first in his family to graduate from college.Upon graduation, James served his country in the Army and then worked for Allstate Insurance. In 1976, he and June decided to leave conventional life and purchase "Pine Knob," a 100 year old 38-room country inn nestled in the Pocono Mountains. Together they built the failing business into a highly successful inn, attracting guests from both Philadelphia and New York City. James took on the roles of business manager, occasional chef, groundskeeper, and emergency plumber. After 11 years in the hotel business, the couple sold the inn and settled in central Pennsylvania, where they opened a Bed and Breakfast and small gourmet restaurant in Danville named "Voice of the Turtledove." This became a popular dining place for locals and visitors. His role was chef as well as business manager and gardener.Eventually, he and June closed this business in order to lead a slower life, but they were never without something to do. He continued to manage his real estate investments and worked together with June in selling antiques. As a devoted servant of Jesus Christ, he was an inspiration to his children and grandchildren, as well as the many employees who worked for them over the years.
